The Five Ton Crane Arts Group is a full service design / build / consulting organization with an expanding track record in the production and fabrication of interactive, immersive, educational and participatory works of art using a variety of mediums and disciplines. From their studio in West Oakland, CA, they harness their collective experience in design, fabrication, finance, education and research to build large-scale public art works with a high level of aesthetic and functional quality.
Five Ton Crane work in a variety of materials and mediums, such as carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, wood and cast materials. Their collective design process incorporates financial, logistical and environmental constraints within a detail-oriented artistic vision. The resulting creations thrive in the real world of crowds and weather, inspire wonder in all ages, and support rich communities of people from diverse backgrounds. Sean Orlando is a multi-disciplinary installation artist, museum professional, and community organizer with an interest in collaborative and immersionary large-scale sculptural installation projects. Sean is the co-founder of the Five Ton Crane Arts Group, Principal Artist at Engineered Artworks, and Production Coordinator at The Exploratorium. His most recent collaborative group projects include the Steampunk Tree House, Raygun Gothic Rocketship, and The Nautilus submarine art car. Sean has exhibited at, and collaborated with, many arts organizations and venues throughout California including The Crucible, the Chabot Space and Science Center, Makers Faire, Landor and Associates, the American Welding Society, The Port of San Francisco, Coachella, Dorkbots, Burning Man, the Worth Ryder Gallery, and Warehouse 416.
David Shulman is an installation artist and collaborator, working with and building community to create interactive, immersive and engaging projects of all sizes. A co-founder of the Five Ton Crane arts group, David is also an original member of Almost Scientific, and an avid supporter of talented friends and colleagues. David has honed his fabrication skills under the patient tutelage of friends, expanding from basic welding to electrical and kinetic systems, and project management. Recent group projects include the Steampunk Tree House, the Neuron Chamber, the Raygun Gothic Rocketship and The Nautilus submarine art car. David currently works as VP of Finance for Obscura Digital Inc.
Dr. Alan Rorie is a designer, artist, and scientist whose work focuses on the intersection between science, art and education. He founded Almost Scientific, a science and art collaborative, after someone told him his method of working was “very scientific.” “I know how science works,” he replied. “This isn’t scientific–it’s almost scientific.” Since then, Almost Scientific has educated scientists about art and artists about science, helping to bring forth such works as gigantic interactive treehouses, large sets of functional brass apertures, fully functional, steam-powered time machines, alien observation tanks housing 9000-volt robotic neurons, and plasma powered rocket ships.
Alan’s individual and collaborative works have been shown at venues as diverse as The Sonoma County Museum, The Exploratorium, Maker Faire, Coachella Music Festival, the Crucible’s Fire Arts Festival, The Science Gallery’s Lightwave Event, the Edwardian Ball and Burning Man. His art has been featured in the science journal Nature, the technology and culture publication Wired, and a wide array of blogs and web-pages. And, his scientific work has been published in Science, PLoS and The Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience.
Alan received a Ph.D in Neuroscience from Stanford University, where he studied how brains compute economic decisions. He has also been fellow at The Exploratorium, the museum of science, art and human perception, and a researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health and New York University
