This is an event we put together for one of the Exploratorium’s After Dark series of adult-centered nights. The overall theme was “Sexplorations”, so we decided to host a Sex Toys take-apart activity in the Tinkering Studio. Good Vibrations, a local sex shop, generously donated over 50 different sex toys, and we set up a series of take-apart stations, complete with a vise, screwdrivers, hacksaws, pliers, and cutters. We invited the enthusiastic and somewhat inebriated public to select a vibrator from our “bar”, then take it apart to its single components.
Not satisfied with that, we also had a station where people could repurpose components from the taken apart toys into jewelry, knick-knacks, pendants, etcetera. Also, since by definition vibrators… vibrate, we let visitors strap a marker to them and use them as naughty Scribbling Machines. Off in the niche, we also set up a stroboscopic light so that the frenetic vibrating motion of the toys could be frozen in time, or slowed down enough to appreciate its complexity. Finally, TI‘s Modesto Tamez led a “make your own sex toy” activity!
