Under Construction
In the first two months of work on the tinkering studio, the contractors from CB2 started with an completely empty gallery space and filled it with giant steel frames to support the walls of our environment designed for tinkering experiences. Before they got to the next step of skinning the beams with plywood and sheet rock, we had to go around and cover all of our exhibits in the south corridor with plastic wrap.

Under Construction
The mudding, taping, and sanding could bring up lots of dust so we had to take measures to protect the exhibits that were waiting patiently outside the construction zone.

Under Construction
They stacked the "skin" of the structures in the future home of our marble machine fort in preparation to start hanging the walls.

Under Construction
In just a few days, most of the walls were up, and to me, for the first time, it began to look like the familiar sketch-up plans we have been working with for a long time.

Under Construction
Next, they filled in the cracks of the walls to make a smooth surface to paint on.

Under Construction
The framework of our cabinets of curiosity arrived and can be seen in this photo behind the ladder. We put them in place and then quickly proceeded to cover them with plastic wrap so their gorgeous appearance would be preserved.

Under Construction
As well at around that time, none other than guest tinkerer Tim Hunkin flew in from England and began work on a giant clock that will be a centerpiece to the gallery.

Under Construction
We wanted most of the gallery to be off white (woolskein to be technical) so that it would not distract too much from the beautiful and funky exhibits and art pieces in the gallery, but some other walls got blue primer for an accent color.

Under Construction
A faux wooden floor, our dog bone tables, and some nice chairs all contribute to how our tinkering environment feels comfortable and encourages deep engagement.

Under Construction
We started placing some exhibits, the wooden dividers, and pieces of cardboard where monitors would be placed to get a sense of how the area around the marble machines fort would feel.

Under Construction
About two weeks ago, all the major construction finished up. The contractors, painters, welders, builders, electricians, roofers and floorers organized by CB2 did a great job in providing us with a blank canvas to start setting up our gallery. Next, our group began work to populate the gallery and tinkering studio with all type of inspiring installations. Stay tuned to our blog as we can now begin to share the inside stories and behind-the-scenes looks at the giant art pieces, tiny curiosities, tinkering activities and new exhibits that we are preparing for the grand opening on April 17th.

Nice blog & picture sharing.
