Amy Van Nostrand

Amy Van Nostrand is a designer who makes large scale structures from cardboard.

She is interested in temporary and mobile architecture made from the leftovers of the modern world: she thinks trash is beautiful. She co-designed and built the Cardboard Zendo, a 30-foot diameter Buddhist meditation hall that has served as a peaceful sanctuary at Burning Man since 2006.

Amy is continually working with cardboard as architecture, developing fabrication methods and experimental forms. Her work speaks to the illusion of permanence and the transient nature of societies. And some of the structures make really cool playhouses too. Amy received her Masters degree in Architecture from UC Berkeley and has an undergraduate education in film and cultural theory. She works out of a large industrial warehouse in West Berkeley for her studio, 2 TON Design/Build.
