Matt Smith

Matt Smith was born in 1965 in Leicestershire, England. After attending various schools including six weeks or so at The Falmouth School of Art, he decided that he would rather spend his time making silly things. He began making automata in 1980. In June of 1986, he founded The Fourteen Balls Toy Company in collaboration with Paul Spooner who designs the majority of the automata. Matt both produces Paul's designs and creates his own work with his wife, Sarah Smith, a talented painter who adds the final colors.

The Fourteen Balls Toy Company's automata are made and painted by hand from raw materials. Their automata are available for private collections and also public display in Museums and other venues. One of the Tinkering Studio's favorites is "Boneshakers" (see video) which is currently on display at the Exploratorium.
